Background of Design/Build/Fly Competition

Design/Build/Fly Competition (DBF) is an international aircraft model design competition for university students sponsored by the American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Cessna Aircraft Company, and Raytheon Missile Systems. The participants are required to design, build their aircrafts and join the race in Tucson, US. There are many famous universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Southern California taken part in this world-class competition.

Mission

The competition is intended to challenge the student team of each university to design, build and fly a remote controlled airplane that can complete specific ground and flight missions. The rules define a mathematical formula used to determine the score for an entry. This year’s competition’s formula have used a combination of design report score, mission score determined by performance conducting 3 mission tasks at the fly-off, one ground mission and the Rated Aircraft Cost, a variable used to define the complexity of the design and the weight of the structure.\r\n\r\nPlease visit AIAA for more info about the rules of the competition.
